volunteer > non-medical
Information for Non-Medical Volunteers. The hospital can accommodate several non-medical volunteers at a time depending on hospital activities and staffing. Most non-medical volunteers are given the chance to visit community-based projects such as home care, mobile clinics, health centers and village health volunteer projects. However, in all instances AHC reserves the right to determine the role of the volunteer and what the volunteer is permitted to do at the hospital or in relation to FWAB/AHC activities.
Hospital policy stipulates that non-medical volunteers are not permitted on the wards unless special permission is given by the executive of the AHC in conjunction with other departments. This is to protect patient confidentiality, to ensure that the medical work area is kept free of unnecessary obstructions and interruptions. At all times the clinical imperatives of the AHC are maintained.
Volunteers must be self-funding and are responsible for their own accommodations, food and health care. There are a variety of guest houses and hotels close to the hospital that other volunteers have found very satisfactory. Volunteers are responsible for ensuring that they have adequate medical insurance which must include emergency evacuation. Intending volunteers are advised to have up-to-date vaccinations including hepatitis A and B, typhoid, diphtheria, rabies, Japanese encephalitis and tetanus.
Volunteering at the AHC offers invaluable experience and insight into the work of a healthcare NGO in a resource-poor setting. To gain from this experience volunteers must have a professional degree, be flexible, self-sufficient and able to work autonomously or in partnership with Cambodian colleagues. Interested applicants need to provide a copy of their CV, two (2) letters of recommendation and proof of specific qualification (e.g. teaching, accounting, etc.)
