FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SHOW SOME HEART CAMPAIGN
SIEM REAP, Cambodia (September 28, 2013) – Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) recognizes World Heart Day by launching the show some heart campaign, the first campaign to raise vital funds for its heart surgery program and operating theater.
The campaign aims to raise US$70,000 through generous international support during September-December 2013. It includes a series of successful surgery stories posted online, a short informational video, a social media photo competition, a fun event for patients on the day of the launch, and much more.
AHC is a non-profit hospital that provides free care to impoverished children in Cambodia. US$300,000 is needed annually to enable 10,000 children to undergo surgery, including heart surgery.
In 2010, thanks to strong relationships with surgical teams in Australia, Singapore, Italy and the US, AHC began its Open Heart Surgery Program. Prior to this, there was no option available for poor families with children who suffered from heart disease in Cambodia. Not only do visiting teams perform complex surgeries, they train staff so that ultimately the Cambodian heart team will be able to perform operations unaided.
From January-August 2013, over 1,100 children have undergone major surgery, and AHC has planned to perform a total of 140 cases in 2013. To meet this target and to continue helping the 1,500 heart patients on the waiting list, US$70,000 is needed.
As one of only a few children’s hospitals in the country that provides care free of charge, support from around the world is necessary to allow AHC to provide life-saving surgery to children, who without help may die.
“I will never forget the doctors and nurses that saved my son’s life. Without them, I would have lost my lovely boy and live with sorrow my whole life. Please support AHC to save other Cambodian children”, said the father of a heart patient.
Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) is a pediatric teaching Hospital working in cooperation with the Cambodian Government to provide free, quality care to impoverished children in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Each day, AHC sees over 500 children from all over the country. Since 1999, AHC has provided over one million medical treatments, education to thousands of Cambodian health workers and prevention training to thousands of families. AHC offers both inpatient and outpatient care, surgical services (including heart-surgery), ER, intensive care treatment and antiretroviral HIV therapy.
