Hundreds Get Active for AHC in the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon and Bike4Kids

The 22nd Angkor Wat International Half Marathon and the 12th Annual Angkor Wat Bike4Kids event took place over the weekend of the 2nd-3rd December 2017, attracting thousands of marathon and biking enthusiasts from around the world to get active and fundraise for a cause.

Angkor Hospital for Children had a combined team of more than 250 local and international participants in both the cycling and running events – our biggest team ever. The weekend commenced with the Bike4Kids charity ride on Saturday, where participants of all ages could take part in either a 17-kilometre, 37-kilometre or arduous 100-kilometre ride through the famous Angkor Archeological Park in Siem Reap.

Half-marathon participants greeted the dawn on Sunday morning with the 21-kilometre wheelchair race the first to commence, followed by the 21-kilometre half marathon, a 10-kilometre road race, a 10-kilometre run for participants with artificial limbs and a family-friendly 3-kilometre course. Despite some last-minute route changes due to a large religious ceremony in Angkor Wat over the weekend, all ran smoothly and the event was a resounding success with an unprecedented amount raised for Angkor Hospital for Children.

Hundreds from the hospital pitched in over the weekend, either working or participating at the event. Team AHC consisted of doctors and nurses, guards and cleaning staff – all running or cycling to support Cambodia’s children. We also had quite a few of our Board Members taking part, including Kenro Izu – the founding father of Angkor Hospital for Children. Our CEO, Claudia Turner, even managed to take out second place in the women’s 100KM bide ride on Saturday!

The weekend wound up with a great brunch event in the garden of the Visitor Centre, where AHC staff, management, board members and international participants mingled and enjoyed the wonderful food and refreshments provided by our kind sponsors. What a fantastic way to end a high energy, jam-packed weekend!

Each year The Angkor Wat International Half Marathon is our biggest local fundraiser and this year we had our largest team to date, raising more than $202,000 towards our fundraising goal. Manulife, the race’s main sponsor, donated an amazing $80,000 to AHC; $35,000 of which was fundraised by Manulife’s staff and management. We thank Manulife for their incredible generosity!

We would also like to express our deepest thanks to all participants, volunteers and supporters, both locally and internationally. The funds raised from this weekend will go towards providing life-saving programmes and services to the children of Cambodia, and none of this would have been possible without you.
