Paediatric Tropical Diseases

Tropical diseases encompass all diseases that occur solely, or principally, in the tropics. The term is often taken to refer to infectious diseases that thrive in hot, humid conditions, such as malaria, melioidosis, lymphatic filariasis, and dengue, which made larger numbers of people ill than usual this year.

AHC doctors have knowledge of paediatric infectious diseases as they see them every day. Moreover, we have international infectious diseases specialists who do onsite training with our local doctors to enable them to diagnosis and treat diseases more appropriately. Our clinical staff undertake regular microbiology rounds as part of our clinic teaching programme. In addition, AHC collaborates with Mahidol University, Georgia Health Science University, University of Minnesota, Enhed for Global Sundhed, Rigshopitalet in Denmark, and The Ottawa Hospital in Canada to run the “Tropical Paediatric Course” in which international health providers learn from our staff through case presentations and lectures.

In order to treat paediatric tropical diseases effectively, accurately and in a timely manner, a well-equipped and functioning laboratory is vital. AHC’s laboratory continues to lead the way in microbiology, haematology, serology and clinical biochemistry in Cambodia. In collaboration with Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU), AHC established a unit dedicated to microbiology in 2005. The laboratory has boosted the accuracy of diagnoses and enables children to be prescribed the most appropriate antibiotic. A wide variety of diagnoses have been made from common to less common pathologies such as staphylococci, streptococcus, ESBL, MRSA and melioidosis.
