Duties and responsibilities

General description:

Ophthalmic Nurse is responsible for assisting ophthalmologist and perform some eye procedures with the primary care of the children who come to the Eye Clinic. The ophthalmic Nurse are directly accountable to the Eye Unit Manager.

Areas of duty and responsibilities/accountabilities

  1. Primary Responsibilities
  2. Be able to work without direct supervision with patient and family education related to eye problem screening program
  3. Perform eye procedures such as taking visual acuity, dressing change, removing suture, probing, and prosthesis etc. according to AHC Pediatric Eye Nursing Standards
  4. Cleaning and sterilizing Eye instruments/equipment
  5. Maintain all of a child’s written ophthalmic nursing note using the guidelines in the AHC Pediatric Ophthalmic Nursing Standards Manual
  6. Monitor children’s condition and inform ophthalmologist about concerns you have and take appropriate action
  7. Think of the child as part of a family and involve the family in the care of their child. Inform them of all the treatments their child are receiving and ensure that they understand and give consent
  8. Practice procedures following the AHC Pediatric Nursing Standards and Ophthalmic Nursing Standards Manual. Confirm with ophthalmologist if the procedure beyond to your scope of practice
  9. Recognize the importance of good hygiene for the child and the hospital department
  10. Teach and encourage good personal hygiene to the children and their family
  11. Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the hospital department and equipment to prevent the spread of infection
  12. Give the children age appropriate and educationally related toys and play therapies
  13. Always ask for help when you are unsure, uncertain or do not know what to do.
  14. Anticipate the needs of the children and the department e.g. informing storeroom about shortages of supplies
  15. Refer problems to the Eye Unit Manager, or senior ophthalmic nurse who’s assigned as appropriate
  16. Offer help to colleagues during times when you are not busy and in emergency situations
  17. Be the communication link in the multidisciplinary team and maintain good communication with other hospital departments and outside agencies
  18. Be flexible about moving to other units during staff shortages
  19. Professional Responsibilities
  20. Follow the hospital policies and procedures
  21. Practice all nursing standards
  22. Adhere to the terms of the contract of employment
  23. Follow the health and safety guidelines of the hospital
  24. Identify inappropriate practices by any AHC staff member. Take appropriate action.
  25. Be accountable for all own nursing actions
  26. Attend unit /departmental nursing meetings
  27. While on duty, act as a representative for the AHC
  28. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
  29. Do not use hospital property or resources for personal use
  30. Inform Unit Manager as soon as possible if unable to work due to illness, following the hospital policy
  31. Educational Responsibilities
  32. Attend CPR, Infection Control, and Nursing Process refresher course once a year
  33. Attend class as required and comply with Nursing Education requirement
  34. Have a good understanding of physiology, anatomy, disease and condition and continue to update and expand nursing knowledge
  35. Recognize where one’s own nursing knowledge is weak and seek help to strengthen it
  36. Determine learning goals following personal nursing evaluation
  37. Take every opportunity to deliver health education to all children and their families
  38. Participate in and provide appropriate in-service training and facilitation of new employees
  39. Be a teacher for Angkor Hospital projects
  40. Ask for teaching or explanation whenever necessary in the clinical setting
  41. Maintain a working level of English relevant the role of nurse in AHC
  42. Personal Qualities
