AHC Celebrates 20 Years of Advancing Paediatric Healthcare

Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) marks 20 years of providing high quality, compassionate care to Cambodia’s children – and in the process, transforming healthcare in the country.

The Beginnings of AHC in Siem Reap, Cambodia 1999

When AHC first opened its gates in 1999, founder Kenro Izu set a goal of becoming a “world-class hospital, for Cambodians run by Cambodians.” The hospital, with just three Cambodian doctors and ten nurses at its establishment, has grown into a leading healthcare organization employing over 500 Cambodian staff, training countless others, and contributing to healthcare procedure, policy and research nationally and internationally.

AHC credits its growth and achievements in advancing healthcare to its staff and volunteers, their tireless dedication to learning and teaching, and a deep-seated emphasis on teamwork.

‘Here, nurses and doctors work together,’ says Hospital Director Dr. Ngoun Chanpheaktra. ‘Together, we have built this hospital into what it is today. We’ve provided care to children as if they were our own. Our independence has come step-by-step from all of the education and training of the local staff, nurses and doctors, along with all of the volunteers who have helped build local capacity.’

While AHC’s mission to improve healthcare for all of Cambodia’s children is as relevant and critical today as it was 20 years ago, it has evolved. As the organization looks ahead, providing specialty services found nowhere else in Cambodia will take priority. AHC will maintain its commitment to education and capacity-building that extends beyond its walls, as it trains the country’s next generation of healthcare professionals.

On 25 January 2019, AHC plans to celebrate the 20-year milestone with a series of events in Siem Reap, including a ceremony held at the hospital and an evening reception. Members of the Ministry of Health, Provincial Health Department, and the Governor of Siem Reap will be in attendance, along with international donors and stakeholders.
