Introduction:

Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) has designed a study entitled: Saving Babies Lives (SBL). It aims to improve the quality of neonatal care.

The SBL Officer role is vital to achieving this. They must be a nurse or a midwife, preferably with 3 years of paediatric or neonatal clinical experience. The SBL Officer works with VHSGs and government healthcare workers in health centres, health posts and hospitals. The SBL Officer plans, coordinates and implements SBL activities including teaching, mentoring, facilitating, interviewing and data collecting.

SBL Officers have a unique opportunity to participate in an exciting programme that will save many neonatal lives, and at the same time, the Officer can learn many skills to develop themselves professionally.

AHC has a zero-tolerance policy towards child abuse, sexual exploitation and abuse and sexual harassment.

Main responsibilities:

  1. Develop his/her own individual plan for any given task within the SBLP that is consistent with the strategic plan and AOP of SBLP under the guidance of the Team Leaders and the SBL Program Lead
  2. Act as a facilitator and mentor for the SBL training and coaching programme
  3. Lead the Participatory Action Research (PAR) with VHSG
  4. Discuss sensitive topics such as the death of a neonate with caretakers
  5. Attend induction training/training of trainer in order build up competencies prior to providing SBL training to healthcare workers
  6. Establish a good working relationship with the SBLP team and actively participate in SBL meetings
  7. Establish a good working relationship with the government healthcare workers across all levels and the PHD/OD staff and actively participate in PHD/OD meetings
  8. Communicate with relevant staff within SBL and the government healthcare workers in order to conduct the SBLP activities such as teaching, mentoring and arranging meetings
  9. Carry out the KAPES assessment (Knowledge, Attitudes, Practice, Equipment, Staff) at the HC, HP and Referral Hospital per plan
  10. Provide teaching, coaching and mentoring to the staff at the hospital, health centres and health posts
  11. Conduct and join the meetings with government health care workers as needed.

Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s or associate’s degree in nursing from an institution recognised by the Ministry of Education Youths and Sport and the Ministry of Health, Cambodia
  2. At least 2 years’ experience in nursing within AHC or a clinical setting outside of AHC
  3. AHC Team Leader level is preferable
  4. Good spoken and written English
  5. Able to communicate effectively with all members of the community
  6. Comfortable in a rural environment and working within villages
  7. Good organisation, time keeping and problem-solving skills
  8. Willing to travel back and forth to AHC’s targeted community
  9. Microsoft Office skills
  10. Confident speaking in large groups and participating in discussions
  11. Ability to work independently, be self-directed and self-motivated
  12. Ability to work as part of a multicultural team
  13. Ability to write summary reports for the project’s responsibilities
  14. Understand the mission of Angkor Hospital for Children
  15. Enthusiasm for the Saving Babies Lives programme
  16. Willingness to adapt to potential challenges faced during the programme
  17. Passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of neonates and their caregivers in remote areas.

Provisions:

  1. Induction training to prepare SBLP officers to provide SBL training to healthcare workers
  2. Shared accommodation in community (sub office)
  3. Monthly fieldwork allowance
  4. AHC vehicle departs AHC at 7:00am on Monday and arrives back at AHC at 5:00pm on Friday
