Hope, bravery and love: Sreypov’s care beyond chemo

June 9, 2025

It takes a lot of bravery to fight a disease as terrifying and painful as cancer. And “brave” is one of the first words that Sophal uses when talking about his daughter Sreypov.

In December 2024, seven-year-old Sreypov got sick with chickenpox. Having taken his children to AHC before, Sophal made it his first stop to get his daughter checked out.

However, tests revealed that something more was going on. Sreypov had too few blood cells, a worrying indication of cancer. A bone marrow aspiration then confirmed the worst — Sreypov had acute myeloid leukemia. Luckily, our oncologists were able to start Sreypov on chemotherapy right away.

But chemotherapy is only half the battle when it comes to cancer care. Hope, bravery, love — these things can be just as important in helping a young child like Sreypov defeat cancer. And this is the philosophy that carried Sophal forward as he cared for his sick daughter.

“What’s kept me going is the hope that one day my child will be cancer-free. That she will be able to go back to school and do whatever she wants in life. All I have is hope. And right now, I’m just doing everything I can to have the best time with my child. To give her a lot of good memories.”

But Sophal’s not doing it alone. A whole team of AHC oncologists, nurses, nutritionists, medical social workers and support staff have rallied around Sreypov to give her the best care possible.

“Because Sophal brought his daughter to us so early, we were able to diagnose and treat her speedily and effectively. It’s because of his quick action that Sreypov can now go on field trips with us, laugh, play games and also plans on going back to school.”

Sreypov finished all her chemotherapy courses in March. Her organ functions and cell levels have returned back to normal. Now, our oncology team is regularly following up with her to ensure she continues improving and the cancer doesn’t return.

With Sreypov’s bravery, a dedicated team and the love of a caring father behind her, we all have hope for Sreypov’s future.

“Everyone at AHC is so caring. Even though Sreypov has had so many complications, the doctors and nurses have healed her step by step with so much care,” Sophal expressed. “I can’t thank everyone enough for helping my child. Thank you so much.”
