Since AHC opened 26 years ago, healthcare has improved in Cambodia. Still, far too many children die before they turn five or don’t get the healthy life they deserve.
Why is this the case?
Primary healthcare in Cambodia has improved dramatically, but specialty care for children with long-term, rare or acute conditions is very limited and existing providers are all operating at capacity
During the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia lost an entire generation of healthcare workers, contributing to the chronic shortage of skilled health staff for today’s needs
Access to health services, quality care and levels of health literacy are significantly lower in rural areas, where 75% of Cambodians live and where AHC operates
This year, AHC turned 26 and in that time we’ve treated over 2 million children. A lot has changed since 1999, but our mission to improve healthcare for every child in Cambodia is as urgent as ever.
For the next 25 years AHC will still be needed to:
Our organisational culture sets us apart, with an unrelenting commitment to improvement, learning, transparency and effectiveness.

Frequently asked questions
A gift to the endowment fund is a gift that keeps on giving. Through careful investment, your gift will grow over time and will help support AHC for many years to come. A gift to the endowment fund could be transformational for AHC — helping children get the care they need for many years.
Every year we must raise around US$5.5 to US$6 million for the ongoing operations of the hospital. The focus of the endowment fund is to enable AHC to carry out its strategic vision, undeterred by annual events by providing continuity and income security. With our domestic fundraising continuing to grow we think now is the right time for us to work with a select group of forward-thinking donors – like you – to safeguard the financial future of AHC. We are carefully working to balance our endowment fundraising with our ongoing revenue needs.
We’re looking for donors who are willing to contribute US$100,000 or more to reach our goal of US$5 million by the end of 2026. We’d be delighted to give you a private tour of the hospital and to discuss recognising your donation in the manner of your choosing — with a spot in our Giving Gallery or plaque within the hospital grounds. Donors pledging US$1 million or more will be invited to join the Endowment Fund Committee.
You will receive quarterly reports on the progress on the Fund and be invited to an annual meeting hosted by the Committee to hear updates from AHC, the performance of the fund and to give feedback.
All donations earmarked for the fund will be kept in an investment account, based in the United States of America at Morgan Stanley. Funds are invested in low-risk equity and money market funds in order to preserve capital and earn a balanced rate of return. The returns will fluctuate but over the long term, the goal is to hopefully earn about 10% per year on the equity funds and approximately 4—5 % per year on the money market funds. With all investments, the value can go down, however these funds have been carefully selected and follow the prudent investment practice of many large institutional endowments (universities, other hospitals) and large pension funds.
The endowment fund is governed by a Charter, which is available on demand, and is managed by an Endowment Fund Committee. Each member of the Committee has special investment management skills or expertise and has a duty to use those skills or that expertise in an appropriate manner in managing and investing the fund.
During the initial fundraising period ending on 31 December, 2026, all donations and returns will be reinvested to grow the principal amount in the fund.
From 2027 onwards the returns generated will provide ongoing unrestricted income to AHC to support life-saving care for children and important projects. If funds from the endowment aren’t required in a specific year, they’ll be reinvested to keep the endowment fund growing for years until the funds are needed.
In the fourth quarter of each calendar year the Endowment Committee will decide what portion of the fund’s returns are allocated to AHC to meet its day-to-day operations and special projects and what portion is kept and added to the principal balance of the fund.
In the future, we anticipate a continuing urgent need for a specialty hospital pioneering specialty treatment and cutting-edge research, similar to the Great Ormond Street Hospital model in the UK. In this context, the hospital uses charitable funding to push the boundaries of the best possible care and produce research that can strengthen other facilities.
With our significant teaching and research track record, reputation for high-quality care and committed compassionate approach, AHC will remain a centre of excellence strengthening the Cambodian health system and beyond for years to come.
