Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) is a non-profit organisation providing free medical care to children in Siem Reap. AHC is seeking highly motivated doctors who wish to gain further experience. 08 positions are available for this postgraduate training programme (Paediatric Fellowship).
AHC has zero tolerance for Child Abuse, Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), and Sexual Harassment (SH).
Requirements
- Applicant must hold a medical degree from an institution recognised by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, Cambodia.
- Highly motivated to learn and improve knowledge.
- Able to work day and night shifts on a rotational basis.
- Able to build excellent interpersonal relationships.
- Good command of English (written, spoken and comprehension).
- Computer literate.
- Able to work in a team environment involving different departments and willing to work in any unit as required by the hospital.
- Enthusiastic and hardworking.
- Honest and trustworthy.
A. Main Responsibilities
- Formulate treatment plans, including pain management.
- Carry out necessary procedures such as setting IV drips, venipuncture, inserting NG tubes/catheters or performing bone marrow aspiration under the supervision of a senior doctor.
- Attend appropriate ward rounds with relevant staff and know each patient’s full medical history.
- Clearly and accurately complete and maintain all medical documentation, including medication and treatment orders, laboratory, X-ray, CT scan and ultrasound requests, OPD and IPD forms, discharge letters, and prescriptions.
- Promptly cancel and/or follow up routine orders or test results and ensure all details are entered into the patient’s chart before afternoon rounds.
- Examine patients using SOAP/RICHMAN documentation methods at least twice daily for IPD, ICU, ER and the neonatal unit.
- Know other patients on the ward, particularly unusual or severe cases, and be aware of any critically ill child to assist in ward emergencies.
- Discuss events and concerns with relevant staff, such as senior nurses, Department Heads, team leaders, supervising seniors or the on-call doctor.
- Maintain professional contact with all AHC personnel.
- Complete discharge summaries and discuss them with the Department Chief before discharging any patient.
- Ensure the discharge information sheet is fully completed, especially the disease code.
- Provide clear and accurate communication to patients and parents regarding the child’s condition, disease process, plan of care and discharge instructions, and ensure understanding.
- Prepare case presentations and discussions as assigned by the Unit Chief.
- When transferring patients to another ward, inform and discuss the case and bed availability with the relevant doctor, accompany the patient and ensure safe transfer.
- Follow the hospital’s transfer policy for transfers within units or to other facilities.
B. Additional Night Duty Responsibilities
- Provide first-line medical care for all hospitalised patients.
- Review the daily reports of all patients and record any new findings.
- Inform the on-call doctor or senior doctors immediately of any potential problems or concerns related to patient care.
C. Emergency Care Responsibilities
1. Provide emergency care for patients coming through OPD and resuscitate patients when necessary.
- Perform CPR and carry out emergency procedures.
- Provide sedation, pain relief and hydration.
- Keep accurate records of events in the emergency room (including vital signs, medications, procedures and decisions).
- Call the specialty doctor, Unit Chief or senior doctors if necessary.
2. Assist the Unit Chief or senior doctor with the following duties:
- Ensure all equipment is ready, available, correct, and in good working order—for example: monitor, stethoscope, tension meter with correct cuff, oxygen tank and mask, suction machine and Ambu bag.
- Ensure emergency drugs are readily available with a list of recommended dosages.
- Ensure proper oxygenation, prevent aspiration and ensure two safe IV lines are available.
- Keep accurate records of all events and medications during resuscitation.
D. General Responsibilities and Behaviour
- Assess and triage patients coming to the hospital as assigned by the Unit Head, including during weekends or holidays.
- Attend and participate in the regular paediatric curriculum and English classes.
- Attend monthly doctors’ meetings and fortnightly mortality meetings, and prepare case presentations as required.
- Come to work on time and begin duties immediately.
- Work according to the Medical Department rotation schedule.
- When on duty (day or night), the doctor must not leave AHC premises unless authorised by the Unit Head.
- The senior nurse in charge must know the duty doctor’s whereabouts at all times.
- Doctors must remember that they represent AHC at all times and ensure their behaviour and conduct are professional.
- Uniforms must not be worn outside AHC premises.
- Residents must prepare a clinical lesson, teaching session, demonstration or discussion for the doctors each week.
E. Medical Responsibilities in OPD/IPD/ICU–ER and Neonatal Unit
- Perform appropriate investigations for diagnosis and discuss findings with the Unit Chief or assigned senior doctors.
- Provide appropriate treatment and follow-up.
- Ensure patients and/or parents understand the diagnosis and provide relevant health education.
- Work with nurses to minimise waiting times. If a long wait is unavoidable, clearly explain the reason to parents.
- Perform medical procedures as permitted by the Unit Head, and always under supervision of the Unit Head or responsible senior doctor.
