Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) is seeking a highly motivated Cambodian individual to fill the currently vacant position of Laboratory Technician (01 position).

The Laboratory Technician will assist in conducting laboratory tests for all hospital departments. The post holder will also be responsible for keeping up to date with current standard medical laboratory practices.

AHC has a zero-tolerance policy towards Child Abuse, Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), and Sexual Harassment (SH).

A. Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory tests as ordered by doctors promptly, with priority given to ER and ICU patients.
  • Draw blood from patients when required, minimising pain during the procedure. Explain the procedure clearly to patients or parents/caregivers before blood collection.
  • Be able to work across all laboratory areas, including Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank and Serology Units, even if specialised in one area.
  • Assist with quality control activities.
  • Attend unit meetings organised by the Unit Manager.
  • Work night shifts and weekends when scheduled.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.

B. Stock Control

  • Monitor and follow up on the consumption of reagents and equipment.
  • Assist with stock movement reports (consumption, receiving, expired tests or reagents) when requested.
  • Assist with the monthly inventory of equipment and reagents.
  • Be prepared to respond to emergency calls (night, weekend, or public holidays) when scheduled.

C. Control and Management

  • Maintain a clean and well-organised laboratory, ensure hygiene standards, and comply with infection control policies.
  • Check and record temperatures for refrigerators and incubators as scheduled.
  • Ensure all reagents and equipment are properly labelled and maintained to quality standards.
  • Inform the Laboratory Manager immediately in the event of equipment breakdowns or shortages of reagents.

D. Educational Responsibilities

  • Support the development of skills and knowledge of other laboratory staff through mentoring and collaboration.
  • Participate in laboratory team discussions on complex or interesting cases and issues.
  • Educate patients’ families and potential blood donors (including foreigners) on the safety and importance of blood donation.
  • Assist in training new staff on policies, procedures, and quality control practices.
  • Support the training of laboratory staff from other hospitals attending training at AHC.
  • Share interesting blood test results with visiting foreign medical students upon request and as time permits.

Requirements

  • Laboratory Technician Certificate or Degree from a recognised university.
  • Previous laboratory work experience is desirable.
  • Good written and spoken English and Khmer.
  • Willingness to learn and continuously improve knowledge and skills.
  • Enthusiastic, diligent, and detail-oriented.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment involving multiple departments and external agencies.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Honest and trustworthy.
