Borey was just weeks away from his third birthday when he contracted a life-threatening infection. He had a high fever, diarrhoea and pain all over his body. His father Leap took him to both a local clinic and hospital, but Borey only continued to get worse. When a neighbor recommended AHC, a hospital four hours away from their home in Battambang Province, Leap decided to take the chance.
By the time Borey got to AHC, he was vomiting, coughing and had mottled skin and trouble urinating. Borey’s life was in danger. He had developed sepsis, a life-threatening complication to the bacterial infection melioidosis.
Our doctors admitted Borey to our in-patient unit and began giving him round-the-clock care and daily medications to kill the bacteria.
“This infection is common but difficult to get rid of. Once it gets in the body, it’s difficult to kill and there’s a high risk of the person becoming infected again.”
Dr Sou Thiraroat, AHC in-patient doctor.
Borey spent two weeks in the hospital. Finally, after completing his treatment, Borey was feeling much better. His fever, vomiting and diarrhoea disappeared, and his appetite returned.
“Since coming to AHC, Borey’s gotten better every day. Every nurse and doctor were so polite and helpful, never leaving Borey’s side. If we hadn’t come to AHC, I can’t imagine what might’ve happened to my son.”
Leap, Borey’s father
Borey will periodically return to AHC over the next three months for checkups. In the meantime, he’ll continue taking medications to prevent the infection from returning.
“I’m so glad Leap was willing to stay with Borey at AHC and regularly return for checkups. The cooperation and dedication of parents is so crucial. Together, we’ll make sure Borey fully recovers.”
